Cicero credited his development in oratory not just to a study of books, but to the inspiration he got from walking in the footsteps of the great speakers and thinkers of the past. Especially inspiring to him was Greece:
“Whether it is a natural instinct or a mere illusion, I can’t say; but one’s emotions are more strongly aroused by seeing the places that tradition records to have been the favourite resort of men of note in former days, than by hearing about their deeds or reading their writings. My own feelings at the present moment are a case in point. I am reminded of Plato, the first philosopher, so we are told, that made a practice of holding discussions in this place; and indeed the garden close at hand yonder not only recalls his memory but seems to bring the actual man before my eyes.”
— De Finibus, Book 5.

His sentiments are echoed by countless other travelers to Greece.
A single day can change the course of your life - a chance meeting, a deep insight, a new sense of clarity and resolution. How much more could a whole week, in an awe inspiring and evocative place, surrounded by friends dedicated to the pursuit of excellence?
If you want to improve your speaking skills, and form relationships with other men dedicated to reviving the classical spirit of leadership in business, politics, and life, we’ve designed this Leadership Retreat for you.
In our experience, the most transformative part of these retreats are the people you meet. The people who come on our retreats are interested in the long game, in building things, and finding other people determined to actively engineer the world they want to live in.
That said, our subject matter focus is more concretely transformative: it is the ancient art of oratory and persuasion, known to the ancients as “rhetoric”. We have designed an entire curriculum, including a 6-week online lead-up, to improve your confidence, clarity, and depth as a speaker, writer, and reader. The ancients did not merely believe that leveling up your speaking ability gave you a skill to increase your options in life; they created a process that itself brings about a profound mental transformation as well.
You will deliver many speeches, some prepared, some impromptu; you will participate in formal, Oxford-style debates, learning to argue both sides of interesting questions; you will deliver a keynote speech on an issue you are passionate about; you will practice presenting real business and political problems you are struggling with, and improve the way you elicit quality, decision-critical feedback.
Our focus in all activities, both sessions and informal discussions, will be on applying the lessons of great leaders of history to our own business, institutional, and personal work.
And we will do all this in Greece. We’re taking our cue from great orators, philosophers, and ancient writers, retreating in the classic Roman spirit of Otium Honestum: “dignified leisure.” Otium is the time and space that Romans would dedicate to deep thought and self-sharpening, all while enjoying the company of like-minded friends, old and new.
The setting is important: you can’t do proper Otium in your office or your house, or on the internet; you have to get away and free your mind.
We will begin our sessions in Athens, where, as Cicero noted, “Everywhere we go in the city, we tread on hallowed ground”. Then we will move on to the Peloponnese, see Corinth, Epidaurus with its famous theater, and the palace of Agamemnon at Mycenae. But interest is not just in the historical sites, but in the natural landscape - the mountains and valleys which inspired poets and determined the successes of great generals. Thus we will climb Mount Parnassus, home of the Muses, overlooking the Oracle of Delphi. We will see the ancient battle sites at places like Chaeroneia, where men like Philip, Alexander, and Sulla won eternal fame.
You will leave with lessons in the tactics of persuasion and habits of powerful oratory that you will use for the rest of your career; you will have experiences that will inspire you for the rest of your life; you will expand your network of people to draw on for projects of joint action. You’ll eat great food, too.
Participants will also be eligible to apply for our exclusive online training community, The Rostra.
Registration is restricted to men. Space is limited and many slots are already filled. Apply soon.
Stay Ancient,
Alex Petkas

Frequently Asked Questions
Some answers to some frequently asked questions.
Does Classical Rhetoric still apply today?
What Bernard Arnault said about building a luxury brand also applies to the most effect speaking today: “It’s a paradox. To be successful, you have to have a combination between modernity and timelessness.”
Because of revolutions in media technology, the spoken word has never been so important. Podcasts and new media channels allow everyday speakers direct access to both niche and general audiences across the world. For this reason effective speakers are more in demand than ever, and the best are able to distinguish themselves.
Because of the increase in cheap, ephemeral content on the internet, timelessness matters more than ever. Words addressed to a single occasion can be continually shared on YouTube for years – decades, maybe.
“Classical” is another word for timeless. The principles and strategies of classical rhetoric are timeless because they were formulated over a very long period, through trial and error, based on what works to persuade humans, and how best to train ourselves to persuade.
Cicero talks about the importance of writing to refine one’s speaking voice. Neil deGrasse Tyson has admitted, “Hardly any sentence in public comes out of my mouth unless I have written it down once before.” Two highly adept speakers saying essentially the same thing: when you study the art of rhetoric, you begin to recognize the enduring patterns.
What is the content going to be like?
What we have found to work best is to learn the theory by focusing on real examples of speeches and writings from history, from great individuals. This is a method of speakers and writers Frederick Douglass, Hunter S. Thompson, Cicero, and most of the greats. Real examples allow you to critique, emulate, modify, redeploy, etc. But this work is made much more effective if supplemented by and organized according to a study of rhetorical theory. Our method incorporates both real examples and theory.
Our goal is to give you not just a week’s worth of intensive content, but a set of habits and practices that you can incorporate into a routine, to refine and build over years of practice.
How does the payment structure work?
Our retreats and courses have limited enrollment and it is important for us to fill all the spots. You secure your spot by paying a deposit. After you pay the deposit, your spot is guaranteed. If you change your mind about coming within one week, we will refund this deposit. One week after payment, the deposit becomes non-refundable.
The balance can either be paid up front or spread out in a number of installment payments. The number of payments depends on the course. If you change your mind about coming after signing up, all or some of the balance paid will be refundable, depending on when you notify us.
